I was very excited to meet with students at the "Take Stock In Children" summer program here in South Florida earlier this month! The amazing staff meets with teens for weeks throughout the summer, exposing them to experiences that are sure to change the course of their lives. On this particular day, I was invited to speak to them as part of an ongoing series, similar to the typical Career-Day at school. It reminded me of a summer program I did at the University of Notre Dame as a teenager, in which we listened to engineers from every field give us an idea of what it took to get to their current position and what their day-to-day life looks like. I was happy to share a little about myself, because I think conversations like these are what really help teens to begin to form their own ideas about specific future goals.
I talked about my experiences with education, internships, and job positions that were the building blocks for my career in private practice as a marriage and family therapist. I emphasized the need for loving the career that you choose, and being sure to find a way to express yourself and your creativity in the work that you do. I like to be interactive in any talk that I do and I was sure to hear from the students on their perspectives. One of the memorable things we talked about was ways in which I bring creativity into sessions to help individuals and families deal with old problems in new ways - and the ideas they shared showed me they would absolutely take on the challenges in this field with competency and innovation. I was very impressed and I am excited that programs like these exist to help shape our children and our future!

A little info from their site: "[Take Stock in Children] provides a unique opportunity for low-income students, in efforts to end the cycle of poverty through education. We offer our students college scholarships, caring volunteer mentors and hope for a better life involving their families. Our comprehensive services start in middle school, continue through high school and include their transition into college. Our program is based on the principal that given extensive support, motivation and accountability, students will strive to ensure their graduation from high school and attain a college degree. We fund our college scholarships and student services through a unique public-private fund raising model, and our mentors generously volunteer their time and skills in the mentoring of our students."
