If Weight Loss Is Your New Year's Resolution

As I see the New Year's Resolution posts I just want to remind you - female AND male - that you are bigger than the number on the scale. I support health and wellness, but please make sure workout goals are just that. Anything overboard to look a certain way or gain acceptance is unhealthy. And if that's the case, strive for self-acceptance this year πŸ’šπŸ’›πŸ’™

Be Ever-Changing in Your Personal Development

This is true of personal development, as well as what we should aim for in our relationships. Strive for positive change, always.

Therapy doesn't have to be initiated by a negative event. Having counsel can be a valuable tool, no matter what the circumstances.

PhotoTherapy Mindfulness Group Session for Substance Abusing Teens

Pictures from a photography-outing today. I conducted a group therapy exercise focused on mindfulness. The group walked to a local park and had the opportunity to capture photos on our walk, as well as at the park. It was a great experience seeing who really connected with the exercise, the differences in each teen's interpretation of the assignment, and the differences in perception. I'm very passionate about this topic, so I made sure to capture a few of my own.

PhotoTherapy Around the World: Eating Disorder Treatment Center

PhotoTherapy around the country: Creative Solutions Therapy incorporates photography as a therapy method and I love to spotlight others doing the same: a treatment center for eating disorders in California is helping women to increase self esteem and address body image issues through the use of photography πŸ“·πŸ’›

"Robin Ruth of San Francisco is providing Castlewood’s female clients with a means of improving their body image and increasing their overall feelings of well-being. She is accomplishing this with ecofemography, her original therapy model, which involves photographing women in natural settings..."

Visit my website www.csolutionstherapy.com for more info on Creative Solutions' use of photography in therapy. Ideal clients would be someone dealing with issues such as trauma, self esteem, or anything they would be initially hesitant to open up about. Clients DO NOT have to be an artist, have experience with photography, or have to own a 'fancy' camera in order to benefit from PhotoTherapy. It is less about the act of taking the photo, and much more about the conversation that comes about after discussing memories, thoughts, feelings, judgments, etc, that a photo may elicit.

HolidaySeasonalDepression: Wondering Why the Holidays Get You Down?

Around this time of year - the weeks between November and January - I encounter many clients and families who feel out of place because, despite all the "holiday cheer" going around, they feel DOWN. They feel alone in this, but they are not. Otherwise known as Seasonal Depression, this mood during the holiday season is very common and it most definitely has many significant contributing factors. In therapy, I've found that once clients can get to the bottom of what is causing the mood/disruption/discord, they are able to begin the process of positive change much more effectively. Changes can be seen when the choices we are making are informed decisions.

Depression is very much a mind AND body issue.

Children are a Reflection of the Communication We Have with Them

Be mindful of the messages you send your child through the feedback you give them. If what we pay attention to is what we get more of, it would stand to reason that our children will continue to reflect what we are pointing out. Do an honest assessment of the communication you have with your child. If you find that the majority of the messages focus on what they are doing wrong, what they could be doing better, and what improvements they should be making - do an overhaul on your output! It may not seem like it, since teens are constantly showing us that they DON'T care what we have to say - but self esteem is built and broken first and foremost in the home.

How to Make it Easier to Communicate with Your Teen

In my work with teens, I've seen and heard many issues arise across the board. There are just some things that are common amongst this population, no matter what the original problem was that brought them to therapy. One such issue is the low quality of communication between teens and their parents. And oftentimes the main issue there is a teen feeling misunderstood, or as if their thoughts and opinions are belittled.
